The goal of Spatial Arts is to increase potential for creative expression. This is accomplished by a strong foundation in technical skills and material understanding. Students develop their artistic practice while making connections with the histories, processes, concepts and contemporary issues in Ceramics and Sculpture. By encouraging diversity of skills, students are better equipped for creative solutions and artistic success.
Our students challenge and support each other in a learning environment dedicated to the value of art in society. From the vessel to public art, the figurative to new forms, the static to kinetic, Spatial Arts provides personal guidance and teaching grounded in form and meaning.
Spatial Arts is located in its own building, a ten-minute walk from the campus main plaza. It has both indoor and outdoor work areas. The building is divided into ceramic and sculpture wings, with advanced student studios in the center. Our students have 24/7 access to the studios, which are located across the street from the dormitories.
Spatial Arts maintains a state of the art facility capable of supporting all manner of work including a foundry, metal shop, wheel throwing, mold making area, and wood shop.
The BFA degree is the nationally accepted professional degrees in visual arts. The BFA carries a high level of expected growth and involvement on the student’s part. BFA students are not required to earn a minor outside of the visual arts. All BFA majors are guaranteed a senior exhibition at Northern Kentucky University. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss degree tracks with their advisor and other faculty members in order to make the decision that is right for them.
The minor in Spatial Arts is meant to give students an introduction to understanding materials, form and space. Students take beginning level Spatial Arts courses in ceramics and sculpture then choose electives to further develop techniques and concepts.
