What majors are offered in the Department of Physics and Geology?

Students may declare a major in the following programs: Physics (PHY), Geology (GLY), Pre-Engineering (PENG), Engineering Physics, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Technology (MMET), Mechatronics Engineering Technology (MET), Electrical & Electronics Engineering Technology (EEET).

How do I declare a major or switch to a new major?

Yes. All students who have declared a major in one of the programs (EET, MMET, PENG, GLY or PHY) require advising. Every semester just prior to registration students must make an appointment to see their advisor to decide their classes. You will not be able to register until your advisor has removed the advising hold on your account.

How do I find out who my advisor is?

You can find your advisor in MyNKU or in SSC Navigate.

Log into MyNKU, click on "My Records" and find the tab titled 'My Advisors'
Log in SSC Navigate, click on "Get Advising" and follow prompts to schedule with your advisor

If you are a first time freshman, or a student with under 30 hours earned, please contact the First Year Student Success Hub (859-572-6900 or advisng@nku.edu) to be assigned an advisor.

If you have re-enrolled at NKU or recently declared a major in the Physics, Geology, and Engineering Technolgy Department, have over 30 hours earned, but do not have an advisor assigned, please contact the department chair, Dr. Dirk Grupe, to be assigned to one of the advisors in our department.

How can I get an advising appointment?

Contact your advisor to set up an appointment by phoning or emailing your advisor. You can also set up an appointment directly by visiting your advisor during one of his/hers office hours. Normally office hours are posted on or near their office door.
