Richard Van Dyke, DMA, NCTM is an Adjunct Professor of Piano at Northern Kentucky University. Dr. Van Dyke completed his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Piano Performance and Master of Music Degree at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where his primary teachers were Elisabeth Pridonoff, Eugene Pridonoff, and Richard Morris. He studied collaborative piano and chamber music with Sandra Rivers. His pedagogy mentors include Dr. Michelle Conda and Dr. Cleveland Page. Prior to attending the University of Cincinnati, he studied with Dr. Carolyn Britton at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls and Beverly Hassel at the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh where he completed his Bachelor of Science Degree.
Dr. Van Dyke’s pre-collegiate students have been recognized for their performances at the David Dubois International Piano Competition (finalist), Depauw Young Artists Piano Competition (1st Prize), MTNA National Competitions (State Winner, Division Winner, National finalist), the Overture Awards (finalist and winner) and OhioMTA Pre-Collegiate Buckeye Competition (District Winner, and State Alternate winner). His advanced students have been accepted into the music programs at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music, Eastman School of Music, Indiana University Jacob School of Music and other fine institutions. Additionally, Dr. Van Dyke teaches at the Cincinnati Music Academy in Cincinnati, OH.
As an active member of MTNA, he served MTNA as the OhioMTA Southwest Association secretary and president. His past state board positions include State President, the MTNA National Competitions Coordinator and VP-Student Activities. In 2010 he was chosen as the OhioMTA Independent Music Teacher of the Year and in 2017 was recognized as an MTNA Fellow in recognition of his contributions to the organization.
Dr. Van Dyke’s has presented lecture-recitals/workshops at the OhioMTA, KyMTA and WisMTA State Conferences as well as the surrounding local districts. He has been a guest lecturer at the University of Cincinnati, Kent State University, Miami University of Ohio and Northern Kentucky University and has been selected to speak at the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy in Chicago, IL (July 2011 and July 2015), and Music Teachers National Associations National Conference in Anaheim, CA (March 2013) and Orlando, FL (2018). His current research focuses on Ten Steps to Parnassus, a progressive approach to assigning Early Intermediate through Virtuoso repertoire including Etudes, Sonatas and the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, in a collaboration with Dr. Lian Tan, Miami University of Ohio, and Dr. Erin Bennett, University of Northern Florida.
