The study of mathematics builds a way of thinking that is used to solve a variety of problems that arise in different contexts. Core courses in the minor build a solid foundation in Calculus and linear algebra. Electives allow you to build skills in logic, abstract thinking, and problem solving. Throughout the program, students will develop strong quantitative reasoning skills that are lucrative for many career paths, as well as graduate study.

In what ways do you believe your mathematics minor will support your career plans after graduating from NKU?

"The reason I chose to minor in Mathematics was because I've always enjoyed the idea of solving problems. I think I'm learning to enjoy this even more because of my minor- this will most definitely help me in my career plans as I'm going into the engineering field, and problem-solving is a huge part of it. The connections I've made with my wonderful peers and faculty will also have an impact on my career plans!"

Have you been involved in any undergraduate experiences that utilized the knowledge you’ve learned in your mathematics coursework?  

"I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Long and Dr. Wilkinson (mathematics faculty members) and other students on a research project that aimed to improve traditional hearing testing and hearing aids. This was done by using calculus-based concepts like Simpson's rule to better visualize the cochlea by obtaining more data points than a traditional hearing test."

Find Your Passions & Build Your Future

Undergraduate research experiences may be available for students minoring in mathematics. Perhaps you can explore machine learning algorithms to classify species of leaves. Or, apply graph theory techniques to find an optimal approach for a visit to King’s Island.
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics offers many social and academic experiences beyond the classroom. Participate in events sponsored by the Math & Stat Club like a movie night, an Amazing Race, a game night, and a book club. Join other majors and minors twice a semester for a (free!) lunch. Each fall the department hosts the annual Sehnert Lecture. In the spring, form a team of students and compete in a mathematical modeling competition. Or, sign-up for the annual Pi-Miler, a 3.14-mile run/walk around NKU's campus. Student accomplishments are celebrated at the annual spring banquet!
Students choosing to complete MAT 302 for the minor are exposed to formal mathematical proof techniques. This builds further logic and problem-solving skills.
