Our Mission

As a public comprehensive university located in a major metropolitan area, Northern Kentucky University delivers innovative, student-centered education and engages in impactful scholarly and creative endeavors, all of which empower our graduates to have fulfilling careers and meaningful lives, while contributing to the economic, civic, and social vitality of the region.

Our Vision

NKU will be acclaimed by students, alumni, the region, and the commonwealth for:

  • Our Success... in preparing outstanding graduates for a global society
  • Our Contribution... to regional progress and economic growth
  • Our Delivery... of distinctive academic programs
  • Our Dedication... to the development and wellbeing of our people
  • Our Effectiveness... in securing and managing resources sustainably

Our Core Values

These are the core values that NKU embraces as we go about our work.

We will promote a culture that fosters and celebrates EXCELLENCE in all that we do. We will engage in honest, fair, and ethical behavior, with INTEGRITY at the heart of every decision and action. Ours will be a community that embraces INCLUSIVENESS, diversity, and global awareness in all dimensions of our work. We will approach our work – how we teach, engage, and serve – with creativity and INNOVATION. And we will maintain a climate of COLLEGIALITY built on respect and characterized by open communication and shared responsibility.

Our Promise

We promise to put our students first — like with Marc Banks, a 2014 graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in public relations who moved on to a job in Washington D.C. as a communications intern for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York.

“I liked being recognized by my teachers and them knowing my name,” Marc says. “It makes the learning environment personal. Teachers at NKU recognize when you’re not in class. This gave me a sense of accountability and encouraged me to go.”

We promise to lead with excellence — like the creation of the PulsePoint app that has saved so many lives, which was born right here in the College of Informatics.

“We just started looking into how we could get the app developed,” says Richard Price, former San Ramon, Calif., Fire Department chief. “We started talking to people, and somewhere during that time we learned of NKU’s program. It came highly recommended; this was a University that was ahead of the curve.”

We promise to make a lasting impact — like with the creation of the Health Innovations Center, a facility that will prepare new-world health care professionals, and provide solutions for the health and wellness challenges of the region.

Our Brand

Our brand is not a tagline or a slogan. It’s the experience people have with us. It is how people think about us. It is how people feel about NKU.

Our brand is represented in everything we do and by everything we say. And in order to create an authentic, distinctive brand, we must commit to a promise that aligns with and supports our mission, our vision, and our core values.
