Grading

This course is divided into three major sections with three quizzes. I have worked hard to keep the value of each section roughly equal and to build in some bonus points. Some sections have many small assignments, some sections have only a few large assignments, but each section is 1/3 of your grade.

The Blackboard weighting does not do the course in thirds with built in bonus points. Therefore, all grades on the Bb are “raw” grades. On the next page is the Excel spreadsheet that will convert your raw grades into “weighted” grades. I will also email the Excel sheet to everyone to be sure the formulas work. Please use for your records. The final WEIGHTED grade will be placed on the standard NKU grade scale (90=A, 80=B, etc.). Since NKU has finally adopted the +/- system of grades you need to know where the breaks are.
Grading:  I will follow the new NKU formula of  Plus/Minus Grades:
A =  4.0  (93-100)   A- = 3.667 (90-92)
B+ = 3.333 (86-89)    B = 3.000 (83-85)   B- = 2.667 (80-82)
C+ = 2.333 (76-79)    C = 2.000 (73-75)   C- = 1.667 (70-72)
D+ = (1.333) (66-69)  D = 1.000 (60-65)
Please note there are no A+ or D- grades and F = 0.0

Section 1 is Drama: I have made the drama section brief and interesting. We will focus around vocabulary and three plays. We will cover one play in depth and with the other two discuss elements of plays.

Section 2 is Poetry: I know that people either enjoy poetry or feel totally helpless when dealing with it. This helplessness is an entrenched emotional reaction. I have set the course up to teach you how to comfortably deal with poetry. If you do what I ask you to do each week then you will never hit an emotional brick wall. (By the way, this is not a slam; we all have emotional brick walls. Before the end of the course you will have figured out mine.)

Because the poetry unit is only 1/3 of the course grade, you can still pass the course even if you do not do as well as you would like on this section.

Section 3 is Short Story: This section is a great lead-in to the English 318 course, and fun in its own right. We will look at only five or six stories, but we will look at them intensely.

I allow a revision of any written piece EXCEPT discussion board responses and quizzes. You may earn UP TO one half of the points you missed on initial submission. Clarifying example: An assignment was worth 100 points, the paper submitted earned 70 points, thus 30 points were missing. A well-done revision could earn up to 15 points for a total grade of 85.
