Student Learning Objectives

These goals are set by the English Department to insure an equal and robust foundation for all students. By accomplishing these goals, students will find their reading and writing skills in all subjects (from zoology to art) greatly improved.

By the end of English 200 (Introduction to Literature), the student will be able to:

* Distinguish different literary forms and styles;
* Discuss their ideas and interpretations of literature in depth;
* Use the primary terms and concepts necessary for critical
thinking, speaking, and writing about literature;
* Write about texts in a sophisticated way and to help students
develop and improve their writing capabilities;
* Demonstrate an ability to use the tools that will allow them to
appreciate and enjoy literature and literary interpretation as
life-long readers;
* Recognize and be able to use basic MLA citation and format.

Student Aides for English 200

I have devised several aides for this class.
* One of them is the Bb page that is a running question/comment page.

* Another aide is my email and phone number on every page on this web site. Do not be discouraged if I am unable to answer the phone; leave a name and a number. I will call you back.

* Anytime a student sends me an email with a question that the whole class needs to have answered, I will send a class wide email showing the question and the answer. No names mentioned of course.

* I check my email three times a day and respond to all emails within 24 hours.

Basic Policies

All papers/Bb discussions are due by midnight of the date in the syllabus. If you must be late, contact me.

Bb assignments cannot be put in after I put in my notes. (My notes are not to be taken as the “one right thought,” but they are to be the wrap up to a discussion.)

When you enter a Bb comment you are about half way done, you must respond to at least one other person’s comment.

Since I believe that I am working with adults that have multiple issues occurring in their lives, I understand that ONE or TWO times this semester you will have a late assignment. I will not instantly deduct points for late. I simply ask that you treat me and your classmates fairly and not take advantage of my liberal late policy.

All papers must be in MLA format (unless we have discussed an alternative format).

The syllabus may be altered as needed by the class.

You are responsible for using your textbook and locating information in the book. I have identified specific areas of study and your textbook adds information to what I have posted on this website.

The three main division of this course--drama, poetry, and short stories--have multiple pages under the related “home” page. Each mini-homepage gives introductory information and should be where you go first with a question. (I honestly expect that your input will help me strengthen this website. I will build as many pages as needed. You ask, I’ll build.)

Your textbook is divided into three main sections with subdivisions in each section. Each section contains material about how to study a body of literature. The fourth section is instruction on how to write for each type of literature we cover.

plagiarism

Plagiarism

University policy is that any student determined to have plagiarized may receive disciplinary action, up to and including, failure of the entire course. Students found guilty of multiple pieces of plagiarism may receive disciplinary action, up to and including, dismissal from the university. By English Departmental policy, any act of plagiarism is grounds for failure of the entire course not just the piece plagiarized. I have and will enforce this policy.

I recognize that in web classes it is extremely easy to be deliberately or accidentally guilty of plagiarism. If you need help to do an assignment please contact me rather than resort to plagiarism. If you need information that will explain what constitutes plagiarism, contact me. Many people are not aware that the theft of other people’s ideas is just as much plagiarism as the theft of their words. I will help you, contact me. Yes, I have failed people for plagiarism and hated doing it. However, I also hate the ideas that (1) a student is unable or unwilling to express his/her ideas and (2) someone's fraudulent submission is being compared to someone's real work. Let's not have to go there--I will help you with assignments and/or work with the materials you found from sources.
