Program Offerings

 

Online Character and Story-Making Workshop (Ages 5-7)

Does your child love stories and making? If so, they will have the opportunity to hone their visual story-making skills, work with a variety of materials, and probably laugh a lot along the way.

During this one-week workshop, we will create popsicle stick character puppets, props, and backdrops to visually tell a story of each child’s creation. This workshop will connect kids’ ideas to physical creating by giving them making instructions to help bring their stories to life!

June 28-July 1, Workshop meets online using Zoom, every day from 9-10:30 a.m. EST. Zoom meetings and demos are recorded, so your child can watch later if you choose. All content can be downloaded and viewed anytime throughout the course. Space is limited, so sign up early.

In this four-day workshop we will be exploring a different project each day to better understand the elements and principles of design that help make artwork more interesting and exciting.

  • Tuesday - Traveling to Tibet and creating our own personal name mandalas
  • Wednesday - Explore tessellation and tools to make perfect patterns
  • Thursday - Dive into color and using found objects to create a color wheel

Digital Drawing Using Procreate  (Ages 13-18)

In this four-week online workshop, students will be learning a variety of digital drawing techniques using Procreate app on a touchscreen tablet, such as an iPad or Android tablet. Students will learn how to navigate through the app, familiarize themselves with interface tools, and create their own calligraphy, animations, and portraits by the end of the course. This course is for anyone who loves to create all types of digital art, such as animation, comics or colorful illustration.

A touchscreen tablet such as an iPad or Android, drawing stylus and Procreate app ($9.99) is required for this course.

Intro to Graphic Design for Teens (Ages 13-18)

This course dives right into the basics of graphic design, no experience necessary! The four-week independent studio project will give students an idea of what it’s like to be a full-time designer, starting with fundamental skills, design principles, understanding the problem-solving processes and how to give or receive feedback. The hands-on experience with digital and analog production processes will elevate students' confidence while shedding light on the different career paths the field has to offer. Students will walk away from this course understanding vocabulary, rationale, and importance of visual communication design.

Laptop or Computer, Sketch-book, pens and pencils

Canceled — Electronic Art / Glitch and Its Forces (Adults & Ages 14+)

Glitch art is the practice of using digital or analog errors for aesthetic purposes by either corrupting digital data/code or physically manipulating electronic devices.

During class time, we will touch on the definition of a glitch, the power of a glitch, and the myriad of ways to force one to happen. This includes some basics like data moshing and hex editing to produce a glitch aesthetic. There will be three critique opportunities for students to get feedback on their work.

Theory may include covering Legacy Russell’s Glitch Feminism Manifesto, Hito Steyerl’s In Defense of the Poor Image and there will be a unit on famous uses of glitches in art and culture (including old Kanye West and Rihanna music videos, and how to find glitch in the art historical canon). Lively discussion encouraged!

This workshop is open to both beginner and advanced artists.

No supplies needed, just a computer.

Software:
Students should download, Audacity, Processing, and Avidemux. These are all free downloads.

Online Zine Making Workshop (Adults & Ages 16+)

In this four-week online workshop, you will create a "zine" edition of your own! This can include text and pictures, pictures only, text only. Both printing and binding techniques will be taught.

If you are an artist, writer, teacher or anyone with a story to tell, a point to make, or just like to draw and make things, this workshop is for you! No previous experience necessary.

"Zines" (pronounced "zeens", short for magazines) are self-published mini books or original content about anything the author/illustrator chooses. Examples of topics range from comics, fanfiction, politics, art, and personal stories. Generally, they are reproduced on a photocopier in small print runs for sale or trade. Zines have been produced since the 1700s and were created by politically involved artists In the Dada and Surrealist movements in the early 20th century and the 1970s Punk subculture.

A material list will be provided before the course starts.

Online Collage Art Workshop (Adults & Ages 16+)

Collage is the art of recycling. It takes the old and makes it new again through fragmenting, recontextualizing and combining imagery in new and interesting ways. This four-week online workshop explores the many possibilities that collage can offer.

Several techniques will be explored in this hands-on workshop including creating visually compelling imagery through the use of layering, using color effectively, how to create a strong composition and more.

This workshop is open to both beginner and advanced artists.

A material list will be provided before the course starts.
