learning objectives

Student Learning Objectives:

These goals are set by the English Department to insure an equal and robust foundation for all students. I agree that by accomplishing these goals students will find their reading and writing skills in all subjects (from zoology to art) greatly improved.
By the end of English 318 (Introduction to the Short Story), the student will be able to:
* Distinguish different short story styles, formats, and writing
techniques;
* Discuss their ideas and interpretations of short stories in depth
with strong reasoned support;
* Use the primary terms and concepts necessary for critical
thinking, speaking, and writing about short stories;
* Write about texts in a sophisticated way and improve your
writing capabilities;
* Demonstrate an ability to use the tools that will allow you to
appreciate and enjoy literature and literary interpretation as
a life-long reader;
* Recognize and be able to use basic MLA citation and format.

plagiarism
(info.library.unsw.edu.au)
Plagiarism:

University policy is that any student determined to have plagiarised may receive disciplinary action, up to and including, failure of the entire course. Students found guilty of multiple pieces of plagiarism may receive disciplinary action, up to and including, dismissal from the university. By English Departmental policy, any act of plagiarism is grounds for failure of the entire course not just the piece plagiarized. I have and will enforce this policy.

However, I recognize that in web and hybrid classes it is extremely easy to be deliberately or accidentally guilty of plagiarism. If you need help to do an assignment please contact me rather than resort to plagiarism. If you need information that will explain what constitutes plagiarism, contact me. Many people are not aware that the theft of someone else's ideas is just as much plagiarism as the theft of their words. I will help you, contact me. Yes, I have failed people for plagiarism and hated doing it. However, I also hate the ideas that (1) a student is unable or unwilling to express his/her ideas and (2) someone's fraudulent submission is being compared to someone's real work. Let's not have to go there--I will help you with assignments and/or work with the materials you found from sources.
