Project 2 - due 4/28

You may work on this project with one other student and, in fact, are encouraged to do so. If you choose to do so, turn in only one paper with both names on it. Placing both names on the paper attests that both of you have participated in the work -- in fact, it should attest that you have contributed equally.

Your paper should be typed. You should respond to all questions using complete sentences, proper spelling, good grammar, etc.

In general, answers alone are not sufficient -- you must show appropriate work and reasoning. You may use available technology, whether your calculators, MATLAB, Mathematica, or any other. Work turned in should be neat, carefully written, and complete.

In this project you will be studying a topic of intense current interest: wavelets. You will be using wavelets to perform image compression (which is an alternative to the "outer-product" compression that I've been mentioning in class).

  1. Read this description of the Haar Wavelet Transform
  2. Perform the equivalent analysis that Patrick carries out, only using your own examples. For example, the first vector he gives -- (6, 12, 15, 15, 14, 12, 120, 116) -- should be replaced by another of your choosing, which serves equally well. Use your own image(s). of special interest to you (small might be better!).
  3. Materials (including Matlab and Mathematica files for the analysis) can be found at Patrick's website.
You may consider another project if there's something that you'd really like to do. Consult with me before doing so, of course, or you're toast....
