ENG 291

 Essay #1 Personal Research Essay

Professionals today, whether writers or in fields such as business, science, and the humanities, must write in ways that meet the needs of general audiences.

The first essay in this course gives you the opportunity to practice writing from a personal perspective.

Write a 4-6 page essay on one of the following topics:

  1. In the essay, "What They Don't Tell You About Hurricanes," Philip Gerard describes the consequences of a hurricane that struck land near his home in North Carolina. Choose an important or meaningful event from your life, and write about it as fully as you can in essay form. Be sure to provide your reader with sufficient context to ensure that s/he can understand the impact of the event as well as you do. Be certain to look up authoritative information from reliable sources that will connect your essay with the world at large.
  2. In class, we completed an exercise to help you brainstorm about three people you know and might write about. Write an essay about one person, conveying enough context and external information to allow your reader to understand this person, fully, from your perspective.

Your essay must be 4-6 pages, double spaced, with one inch margins all around, in a 10-12 point font. You must include, in the upper left-hand corner of the first page, the following block:

Your name
