Creating a Professional Newsletter
Desktop Publishing Software
Features - multiple columns, insert pictures, wrap text around them, add color and lines
Word provides many of the formatting features of a desktop publishing package
Desktop Publishing Terminology
nameplate (banner) - top portion of newsletter contains title
issue information - date of issue of letter
rules (ruling lines) - horizontal lines in nameplate
subhead - heading in body of letter
vertical rule - line between columns
wrap-around text - text wraps around graphic
run-around - space between graphic and words
2 Types of Multiple Columns
Parallel - table columns, created with the Insert Table button
Snaking - newspaper columns, flows from the bottom of one column to the top of the next, created with Columns button on Standard toolbar
Entering a Subhead
and Associated Text
Subheads - are headings placed throughout the body of the newsletter
Justified - left and right margins are aligned like edges of newspaper columns

Creating Dropped Capital Letter
Dropped Capital Letter (drop cap) - first letter in paragraph appears larger than the rest of the characters in paragraph
Text in paragraph wraps around the dropped capital letter
Inserting a Pull-Quote
Pull-Quote - quotation pulled, or copied from text of document, given graphic emphasis so that it stands apart (grasps attention of reader)
copy text to Clipboard, paste it to column. To position it between columns, text box placed around it, then moved.
Using Macro to Automate Task
Macro - series of Word instructions that are grouped together as a single command
convenient way to automate a difficult or lengthy task
Examples: formatting, editing activities, combine multiple commands, display dialog box with single keystroke

Word macro recorder - used to create a macro, records a series of actions
run macro - any time to perform the same set of actions
macro language (Visual Basic) - powerful programming language available in all Office 97 applications
