SEYS Scavenger Hunt
Objective:
- to create a web page (review)
- to use a search engine to do some elementary research
This exercise requires a search engine: this is a web service which has
"spiders" (search programs) indexing more than a billion pages all over the
world. Search engines use databases and keyword matching software to allow you
to find all pages containing particular words or phrases.
Use the search engine Google
(www.google.com) (or any other search engine you prefer) to search for a
variety of items. See how many of the following you can answer using the
internet, and create a web document to document your results. You'll want to
create links to the "answers".
- Searches associated with Environmental Science:
- Find one (or more) definitions of environmental justice.
- What is the number of President Clinton's 1994 Executive Order
to establish environmental justice as a national priority?
- When did President Bush (the younger) say "On the brownfields of
yesterday, we will build the green industries of tomorrow."
- Find an image of the deforestation of Tierras Bajas, Bolivia
- Find the EPA's official Environmental Justice page.
- Now some pages related to other activities of our workshop:
- Find a page that describes GIS (Geographic Information Systems),
including the history of GIS.
- What is GPS, and how is it related to GIS?
- What is geocoding?
- See if you can find the document "A Beginner's Guide to HTML", or
a similar document.
- Find "the official" Holmes High School website.
- Find a web site especially serving Covington, KY.
- Now for some fun pages:
- Find a cool website for a musical interest of your own.
- Find a website devoted to your favorite sport or hobby.
Remember to document your sources: we need to be able to back-up what we
find. Don't be caught without your source, or you could be accused of making it
up! Can you find out who authored the page? How old the page is?
