CHAPTER 16 Backup Procedures
 16.1 Backup Procedures
One of your most important functions as a System Administrator is to maintain the integrity of the data on your system. Since hardware does break and people make mistakes it is imperative that you make frequent backups of the file systems. That way in the event of a disk crash or accidental deletion of files you can recover a recent version of the data or program. Generally you back up data from disk to tape (1/2" 9-track, 200 MB; 1/4" cartridge, 150 MB; 4mm DAT, 1-8 GB; 8mm, 2-10 GB; or DLT 20 GB) or removable optical disks, for long term storage. If you have the disk space you can consider making backup copies of critical data files on other disk partitions. If your system doesn't have a backup medium emphasize to the powers that be that someday your disk will crash and you will not be able to recover their data.
