Pete Nerone remembers John

A recollection of a time with John Elmer and the Pope....

Pope Francis recently passed away. While this is not a religious post I have attached a reflection one of the volunteers from our days in Togo wrote about a visit from Pope John Paul II during our time there. I think both popes would have been excellent volunteers. John Elmer was an animal traction volunteer that grew up in Kansas City. We called him Fr. John because he listened sympathetically to many confessions. He officiated my first wedding ceremony only to find out later that the embassy wouldn't recognize it. His selection to read from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy has guided Jackie and me through several decades. “There is a moment in every dawn when light floats. There is the possibility of magic. Creation holds its breath.” May the next pope inspire more people to serve in the Peace Corps or other worthy ventures.
