MAT 119 -- Fall 2012 -- Precalculus (3 credits)

MEETING TIME/PLACE: 10:00-10:50, MWF, MEP314.
CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Analytic geometry; algebraic, trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Not open to students who have passed MAT 128 or MAT 119. PREREQ: C- or better in MAT 109 or placement.
TEXT: MAT 119 by Stewart, Redlin, and Watson. This
package consists of chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 of Precalculus, 6th
Edition, by Stewart, Redlin, and Watson.
GRADING: There will be three exams and a comprehensive final.
Homework will be assigned regularly: homework will always be
collected, but only a few problems (chosen randomly) will be
graded. (Take some of our statistics courses in order to understand why this is a fair method
of evaluation!)

The tests will be given in-class.
Make-up exams will not be given except in extreme circumstances.

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned regularly. You should
expect to do a lot of homework in order to do well in the course.
ATTENDANCE: The student is responsible for all material assigned or
discussed in class. Attendance will be taken, and may be used along with class
effort (as measured by participation - asking questions, answering other
students' questions, group work, etc.) to resolve borderline grades.
WITHDRAWAL: The last day to withdraw from any class with a grade of W is October 29, 2012.

- M 9:00-9:50; 11:00-12:00.
- TR 9:15-12:00.
- WF 11:00-12:00.
I am also available by appointment, and at random when approached with
a smile.
