Day 6, Mat194: Mathematical Sciences Seminar

• Today we welcome two current NKU students, seniors, teetering on the cusp of graduation and many fond farewells!
  • Parker Kain: Parker will graduate in May, and then be starting in June as a Data Scientist for 84.51 in downtown Cincinnati. He is in Honors, a double major in Stats and Data Science, and very interested in the computing side of Stats (Machine Learning, etc.). He will be especially happy to talk more about research experiences, and even just the fun things he has done up in the atrium over the last 4 years (ask him about The Sudoku Tournament!).

  • Alli Zembrodt: Alli is also graduating in May, with a double major in Applied Mathematics and Data Science. In July, she will be starting at GE Aviation in their digital technology leadership program (probably located in downtown Cincinnati). In between graduating and starting at GE, she is hoping to do a little bit of traveling and enjoying some time off with friends and family! Very smart.

    Fun fact: Parker and Alli's trivia team, 95% Confident, is in their third consecutive week of #1 status, setting a new record for the Lucky Duck Pub!

    Less fun, but still a fact(oid): I believe that Alli and Parker will be presenting at the KYMAA meeting in March.

• Your short essays about Jen's visit are due today. You can email me those (but remember that I'd like your notes, too).

• Upcoming events:
  • Today, 2/27: NKU Career Expo: NKU is hosting a career expo on Wednesday, February 27th from 2-5 pm on the first floor of the Student Union. More than 135 employers will be seeking students for co-ops, internships, and full-time jobs. More information can be found here. A directory of employers attending is here.

  • Tonight, 5pm: STEM Pizza Supper: The first STEM Pizza Supper of the spring semester will be today, Wednesday, February 27 at 5pm in SC 302.

  • 3/29-3/30, Friday, Saturday: KYMAA (Centre College; overnight, with expenses "almost-all" paid -- you might have to buy a one lunch)

  • 4/5-4/6, Friday, Saturday: Pop-Up Conference: origami on Friday afternoon, and domino math on Saturday morning. We'll need student help for this!

  • 4/9-4/10: The Student Celebration of Research and Creativity is also coming up April -- the 9th and 10th. There are opportunities to visit talks, or the big poster session.

  • On-campus or off-campus talks (coming soon! One or two in April)

• Next week, we'll have a visit from a retired mathematical historian, Daniel Curtin. I've asked him to revisit Lockhart's Lament, and share his perspectives on it (in addition to other things).

Today we'll be tag-teamed by these amazing identical twins, separated at birth, but reunited here at NKU.

They will be sharing some of the high points and tips they've discovered over the course of their experiences here that they think you might like to know.
