- Announcements:
- Welcome! I'm glad that you're here.
- Roll
- This course is a little unusual: you may have gathered that, or you may
have just signed up for MAT115 to get a requirement out of the way.
- Ordinarily I would start off the course with syllabus, discussion of what
we will be doing, etc. However this course requires a different tack, and I
want to start at the beginning with you all.
I was recruited to teach this course -- the first time for me -- and so I want
you to hear essentially the same "sales pitch" that I heard, from the same
salesman.
- Before I turn things over to our guest, I want to emphasize one thing,
however: this is a math class!
The problem we're going to consider is similar to a problem that my son posed
yesterday: how do we decide if one cereal is better than another?
- Now I turn things over to Mr. Mark Neikirk, executive director of the
Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement at Northern Kentucky University will
give us our charge.
Contact info for Mr. Neikirk:
- Founders Hall 536 | Highland Heights, KY 41099
- neikirkm1@nku.edu | civicengagement.nku.edu
- 859.572.1449 (office) | 859.801.3838 (mobile)
- For next time: I'd like you to familiarize yourself with the Census
profile and map for Tract 505. We'll strategize in our next meeting!
