HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University has been honored with a national award for its commitment to diversity.
Minority Access, a national nonprofit committed to increasing diversity, decreasing disparities, and reducing incidences of environmental injustices, honored the school this week by naming it a recipient of the Role Models Award, calling NKU “an institution committed to diversity for 2015.”
NKU will be formally recognized during the Sixteenth National Role Models Conference, Sept. 25-27, 2015, at the Royal Sonesta Harbor Court Hotel in Baltimore, Md.
“Minority Access is pleased to bestow this special honor on Northern Kentucky University in recognition of its current commitment to diversity,” said Andrea D. Mickle, president of Minority Access. “We congratulate you and your institution. We thank you for cooperating with Minority Access in identifying institutions committed to increasing the pool of scholars from underrepresented populations.”
The National Role Models Conference is one of the most prestigious conferences of its kind addressing issues of diversity and disparities in the nation.
“NKU is proud to be recognized for our commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence,” said NKU President Geoffrey Mearns. “We are working to build and preserve a community where all students, faculty, and staff experience a safe and inclusive campus environment. This award acknowledges that we are making progress toward that goal.”
Dannie Moore, NKU assistant vice president of student inclusiveness, will travel to Baltimore in September to accept the award on behalf of NKU.
“This is a huge honor for Northern Kentucky University,” Moore said. “Diversity and inclusion has always been a priority for our institution, and the commitment can be seen at every level.”
The Minority Access mission is to assist colleges and universities, the Federal Government, and agencies of other governments and corporations of all kinds in implementing programs and providing services to recruit, enhance and retain underserved and underrepresented populations.
Minority Access has received national acclaim for its successful track record in advancing educational, research and employment opportunities through the National Role Models Project, National Role Models Conference, student internship programs, college readiness and access programs, and other enriching programs.
