Northern Kentucky University will host members from the startup community and entrepreneurially minded students from across Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati this weekend in the Griffin Hall George and Ellen Rieveschl Digitorium.

Startup Weekend ( brings developers, designers, marketers, product managers, and startup enthusiasts together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startups.

It begins with open-mic 60-second pitches that result in the formation of small teams around the best, most viable concepts. Teams spend the weekend focused on customer development, validating their ideas, and building prototypes with the help of experienced mentors. On Sunday, teams demo their products and receive feedback from a panel of experts.

NKU President Geoffrey Mearns said the university is honored to host the region’s entrepreneur community. “Through our extensive community partnerships within the College of Informatics, the Haile/US Bank College of Business, and throughout our campus, we are committed to innovation and entrepreneurship within our region,” he said.

“Startup Weekend is not just about launching a business,” said Dr. Rodney D’Souza, Fifth Third Bank Endowed Professor of Entrepreneurship and director of the Haile/US Bank College of Business Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. “It is about understanding the entrepreneurial process - how to ideate, build a team, validate assumptions, network, and develop relationships. Participants get to do all this in a safe and nurturing environment. For many, it's the first taste of entrepreneurship.”

Further, events like Startup Weekend strengthen an already growing network of aspiring local entrepreneurs. Attendees are creative, influential, and driven, and more than 50 percent of them identify themselves as software developers. They are the kinds of people who will bring products back to the office on Monday after using them during the weekend.
