HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Carol Sexton is one of the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s trailblazers.
Sexton has worked at the Pulaski County Public Library in Somerset since 1997 as a children’s librarian and has been featured for her work with children and the Literacy Bell there in the American Library Association’s national magazine, American Libraries. She is using her education to build upon the tools the library has to continue the great work going on in area schools.
Now the 2012 graduate of the library informatics program in Northern Kentucky University’s College of Informatics will receive a Trailblazer Award Sept. 29 at the Center for Rural Development at 5:30 p.m. as part of the 2014 #RoadToNKU Commonwealth Tour.
Sexton will join several area mathematics teachers who will also be honored with the NKU Trailblazer Award for persistence in making a difference in the mathematics skills of our children.
"The Trailblazer Award is recognition of those citizens throughout the state who are changing lives through new and innovative education programs,” NKU President Geoffrey S. Mearns said. “With improved math skills and added library capacity, Kentucky's children will be better prepared to meet the demands of this century."
The event is open to the public and will include an opportunity for high school students and adults who want to return to school to complete their degree to meet with university admissions representatives.
Sexton began her own journey at NKU through a tremendous scholarship opportunity – a grant called Bridging the Gap: Supplying the Next Generation of Librarians to the Underserved Counties of Rural Kentucky.
This wonderful scholarship opportunity allowed Sexton to complete a degree, a process she began back in 1975 and then again at NKU in Spring 2010 after raising a family and putting her own children through college. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Library Informatics.
The #RoadToNKU is a tour of community engagement activities throughout the Commonwealth. Somerset is the first of eight stops through Dec. 4.
