HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University Master of Social Work has received accreditation by the Counsel on Social Work Education (CSWE).
The program was granted full accreditation with no deficiencies or contingencies at the October meeting of CSWE’s Commission on Accreditation. NKU joins 228 other master’s in social work programs that are fully accredited nationwide.
“It was through the dedication of our faculty that NKU was able to achieve this accreditation,” said program director Dr. Holly Riffe.
Student engagement in activities such as the Dixie Mentorship program, research in Photovoice and a grant from the Department of Justice for the Norse Violence Prevention Center are hallmarks of this innovative program. The Dixie Mentorship program brings second-year MSW students to Dixie Heights High School and assigns each MSW student an “at risk” Dixie student. The NKU students provide direction to help their high school counterparts overcome barriers toward completing their education. The program was so successful in its first year, it has been expanded to three schools thanks to an NKU University/Community Partnership grant.
Photovoice also aims to help at-risk high school students by giving them an expression vehicle. Local high school students were asked to take photographs that analyzed barriers to graduation and available resources. The photos and descriptive captions were then displayed at NKU last spring.
The Norse Violence Prevention Center aims to strengthen the effective campus response to violence against women. It includes developing and implementing policies and education programs regarding sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking; developing and strengthening victim services; educating victims about options in reporting violence and bringing legal action; and improving coordination among campus and community partners.
CSWE is a national nonprofit association of social work education programs and individuals that ensures the quality of social work education. CSWE pursues this mission by setting and maintaining national accreditation standards for baccalaureate and master’s degree programs in social work, promoting faculty development, engaging in international collaborations and advocating for social work education and research. It is the sole accrediting agency for social work education.
