NKU Earns Three Blacksmith Awards
for Excellence in Public Relations

– The Northern Kentucky University Office of Marketing and Communications brought home three Blacksmith Awards, presented annually by the Cincinnati chapter of the Public Relations Society of America for outstanding public relations work, at the organization’s Nov. 14 ceremony.

The university earned a silver medal in three different categories – external newsletter or magazine; public service announcement; and speech writing. Graphic Designer Dionne Laycock and the Office of Alumni Programs earned the magazine award for Northern Magazine, NKU’s alumni publication. Jim Pickering, director of special projects and communications, earned awards for an NKU “Dreamers Welcome” television commercial as well as what one judge called a delightful speech written for the university’s 2012 Lincoln Awards ceremony.

One judge wrote of Northern Magazine: “Excellent example of being ‘on target.’ There’s good management of creative content and really honing in on what might be of interest to a varied audience. This publication will continue to endure as the audience becomes more engaged.” Another judge noted the magazine’s beautiful design, particularly given its small staff.

The PRSA receives entries from local corporations and PR agencies as well as not-for-profit and government agencies. Other award winners included some of the largest organizations in the region including: the 2012 World Choir Games Cincinnati Organizing Committee; American Greetings; Atomic Media Labs; Cincinati USA Convention & Visitor's Bureau; Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber; Fifth Third Bank; Girard’s; Great American Insurance Group; Northlich; The Eisen Agency; The Greater Cincinnati Foundation; and Wordsworth Communications.

"What we are able to accomplish with such limited resources is one of the things that has always impressed me so much about our people," said Rick Meyers, assistant vice president for marketing and communications. "But that our work compares favorably to that produced by agencies with 10 times the staff and tools at their disposal is no surprise."
