This micro-credential looks at global sports from multiple perspectives—sociological, psychological, cultural and economic—and equips students with an understanding of sports’ influential role in global society. The courses critically evaluate the positive influence of sports in our daily lives.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define terms and concepts dealing with the socio-cultural study of sports.
  • Demonstrate the reasons for the growth of sports as a key part of American and global society and culture.
  • Understand the interrelationship between sports and various social institutions, such as education, politics, business and mass media.
  • Interpret issues dealing with diversity in sport.
  • Explain the major characteristics and basic steps for conducting research in sport studies.
  • Implement theories on the use of sports and the media as a means for future social change and analyze the implications of such power and influence in sports and the media.
