This is Hayden Romero, a fourteen year old boy about to start the year at his new high school. Hayden loves to hang out with friends, swim, and watch Netflix during his free time. Hayden was super excited about starting high school at the beginning of the summer, but as August grew closer and closer… he wasn’t so sure about it. His parents suggested that he could join the high school’s swim team since he had really enjoyed it during his sixth and seventh grade years. He wasn’t so sure though, because at the beginning of his eighth grade year he didn’t make it on the team. He decided to just stick with swimming on his own for now since he was still bummed out about not making the team last year.
Starting in mid-July, Hayden noticed that sometimes he would be watching tv, hanging with friends, or doing other laid back activities and his heart rate would rapidly increase. It wasn’t like he was working out or swimming or anything, so he was confused why he felt like he’d just ran a marathon. Shortly after, he started noticing some changes in his appetite. During his old swim season, he was eating 24/7 to refuel his body and stay healthy. Now, he could barely eat a few bites without feeling nauseous. He even noticed that his palms were getting sweaty and he started feeling really warm. What was going on with Hayden’s body? It wasn’t until just a few weeks ago that Hayden was staying awake all night long worrying about what was happening to him. Was he getting the flu right before school started? Maybe he just caught a stomach bug from one of his friends that had been sick recently? He remembered that at the beginning of his eighth grade year he felt the same kind of sickness, too. He decided that he probably just had the same illness he had last year and to not worry too much.
