- Northern Kentucky University signed and returned the ‘Recipient’s Funding Certification and Agreement’ for the Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act on April 13, 2020. Northern Kentucky University received $3,999,482 under Section 18004 (a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students. This amount represents 50% of University’s total allotment under the legislation.

- The University estimates over 8,000 students are currently eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in the Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965.
- As of May 13, 866 students have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
- Northern Kentucky University’s methodology for distributing funds under the CARES Act:
- All students enrolled at Northern Kentucky University during the spring 2020 semester, at the time of the disruption of on campus operations due to the national pandemic and who met Federal Government’s requirements to receive CARES Emergency Student Grants were sent an email inviting them apply for funds at the NKU Covid-19 website. The application collected the following information: (1) Time of Application, (2) NKU Student ID Number, (3) Student Name, (4) NKU Email Address, (5) Confirmation of current NKU student enrolled in spring 2020 coursework, (6) Confirmation student incurred expenses related to the disruption of NKU campus operations due to coronavirus (7) Confirmation of such expenses as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care, and (7) Confirmation of information provided as true and accurate.
- Applications were pending review while award amounts were assigned based on responses of the student’s top 2 greatest needs.
- Awards were validated to confirm eligibility.
- Eligible students were awarded an award ranging from $150-$1,200. Award amounts did not exceed the scheduled maximum Federal Pell Grant for the 2019-20 academic year.
- Prospective applicants were sent the following communication:
We understand the COVID-19 pandemic has created a great deal of uncertainty and presented unanticipated financial challenges for our students, university and community. To assist in managing financial challenges during this crisis, the federal and state governments have provided funding to support our students, which we are calling NKU CARES emergency funds.
The NKU CARES Emergency Funds are intended to help students with financial need related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19, including costs for food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and child care.
These limited funds will be distributed in a fair, equitable and efficient manner. However, due to the volume of need, some applications may not be approved. Applicants will receive an eligibility status update via university email, after applications are reviewed.
