Dear Residential Students,

After careful consideration and thought, and with the input of University leadership and guidance by the CDC in establishing best practices in social distancing, University Housing recommends that all residential students who are able to do so should return to their permanent residence as soon as possible.

This decision was not made lightly. We value the safety of our Norse family and want to do what is in the best interest of public health. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and the disruption to your lives. We are asking all residential students who are able, noting the exceptions below, to remove their belongings, turn in their keys at a Village desk, and leave campus by 4:30 p.m. on April 1, 2020.

While moving out, we encourage students and families to practice social distancing, as promoted by the CDC, to reduce the risk of spreading any illnesses. Keys can be returned between the hours of 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., Sunday through Saturday, until April 1, 2020.

Exceptions to remain in University Housing include:

Special Circumstances: Any student who is concerned about their ability to move out by Wednesday, April 1, 2020 – or has other concerns – should email Students can also call the University Housing office at (859) 572-5676 or (866) 572-5676. Special circumstances and requests to stay will be determined on a case-by-case basis by a group of staff from University Housing, the Dean of Students Office, and the Office of Student Conduct, Rights, and Advocacy.

International Students: We are fully aware that international students will have particular challenges based on the circumstances in their home countries and new travel restrictions. International students will be identified by International Student and Scholar Services and University Housing and sent direct communications.

Students in self-quarantine: Students who are currently in self-quarantine, either voluntarily or by mandate, will be given extra time to complete their self-quarantine before being asked to move out.

Other considerations:

Housing costs: Students who choose to leave University Housing will receive a pro-rated refund or credit for the remainder of the Spring term after April 1, 2020. Additional information on processing refunds and credits will be forthcoming.

Concerns with Moving Out: If a student is unable to remove their belongings from their room and turn in their key by 4:30 p.m. on April 1, 2020, they should contact University Housing to schedule an appointment to remove their belongings in April or May. Students unable to return at all during these time frames should contact University Housing for more information. In certain cases, students will be allowed to mail their keys back to University Housing, receiving them back temporarily during their move-out.

Mail and Packages: Please ensure that all mail delivery is re-routed to your permanent address by utilizing the address change form with the US Postal Service. We will be unable to forward mail and packages to individuals. Packages and mail that arrive at University Housing will be returned to sender on a bi-weekly basis. Residential students should check their mail and the package room in their Village before departing to collect any unclaimed mail. Addresses can be changed online with the US Postal Service (cost: $1.05) or in person at a local post office with a paper form.

University Housing looks forward to continuing to serve our Norse students next year and we encourage students to submit their Housing application for next year. The priority deadline will be extended to June 1, 2020, and all prepayments for returning students will be waived for applications after March 31, 2020.

We wish you the best with the remainder of your semester and we encourage you to stay safe and practice social distancing.
