The NKU String Project is part of the nationally recognized National String Project Consortium. The NKU String Project was founded in 2012 and is proud to offer quality string-music instruction at an affordable price. Classes are taught and overseen by the Director, Master Teachers, and college Undergraduate Teaching Assistants, making us a program like no other! NKU is one of only 40 String Project programs in the United States and was recognized as Outstanding String Project of the Year in 2015 by the American String Teachers Association.

 2018–2019 NKU String Project

The NKU String Project enrollment for 2018-2019 is closed. If you are a string player with experience, please contact Dr. Holly Attar at to arrange an audition for mid-year entrance and placement.

Please note that tuition prices do not include instrument rental or parking.

Spring Semester 2019 Start Dates:

Youth classes begin on Wednesday, January 16, 2019

Adult classes begin on Saturday, January 19, 2019


Youth Classes

Level I Beginning Class

Ages 8-12
Wednesdays: 4:30-5:15 p.m. AND Saturdays: 10-10:45 a.m.
Tuition: $140 (uniform t-shirt included)
Prerequisite: none

Level II Intermediate Class/Orchestra

Ages 9-13
Wednesdays: 5:30-6:15 p.m. AND Saturdays 11-11:45 a.m.
Tuition: $160 for the entire academic year (uniform t-shirt included)
Prerequisite: Students must meet one of the following:

  • Completion of NKU Prelude Class
  • Permission of String Project Director AND audition

Sinfonietta Strings
Level III Orchestra

Ages 10-15
Wednesdays 5-6 p.m. AND Saturdays 11 a.m.-noon
Tuition: $180 for the entire academic year (uniform t-shirt included)

Prerequisite: Students must meet on of the following:

  • NKU String Project Students: Completion of at least one (1) year of Intermezzo Class AND successful audition
  • New Students: Successful entrance audition: (1) 2-octave C, D, G scales, (2) solo piece of choice that demonstrates the student's ability (Suzuki Book II or higher), (3) sight reading. To schedule an audition, please call the Music Preparatory office at (859) 572-7737.

Adult Classes


Ages 15+
Tuesdays: 6:15-7:30 p.m.
Tuition: $170 for the entire academic year
Prerequisite: none (no previous musical experience is necessary!)

Structure: This is a course that teaches the fundamentals of playing a stringed instrument (including music reading). After the completion of the course, the students have the option to merge into the Adult Orchestra.


Ages 18+
Saturdays: 10-11:30 a.m.
Tuition: $170 for the entire academic year
Prerequisite: Completion of Beginning Adult Class or equivalent experience.
