STARTALK Program

         For Arabic and Chinese

If you are fluent in Arabic or Chinese and are either currently teaching or interested in becoming a teacher, this program is for you! 

The STARTALK Program works as part of the Intensive Summer Institute for World Language Teachers to provide educational opportunities for future teachers of Arabic and Chinese.  Scholarships are available for future Arabic and Chinese Teachers. 

Scholarships Include:

Full tuition for the Intensive Summer Institute for World Language Teachers

A stipend towards on-campus housing costs for participants who do not live locally.

The opportunity to take part in the STARTALK Summer Camp as an instructor for the free language classes for kids.  Master Teachers will provide guidance and supervision.

Additional professional development workshops specifically on the structure of Arabic and Chinese. 

The additional professional development sessions will take place in the mornings during the week of June 9th through June 13th.  These sessions will take place around the schedule of the Intensive Summer Institute and will cover information to help:

Increase the metalinguistic skills of future teachers of Arabic and Chinese.

Review the structure of the languages and the areas which are problematic for native speakers of English to learn.

Explore materials and approaches which have proven to be successful for these particular languages, including approaches to literacy and the use of technology.

To apply to the STARTALK Program, follow the application process for the Intensive Summer Institute for World Language Teachers.  When you fill out the Unclassified Graduate Application, check "yes" that you are interested in the STARTALK Scholarship.  Recipients will be notified when decisions about acceptance and scholarships are made.  Applicants will be accepted on a rolling basis beginning the end of March.  Click here to go to learn more about the Intensive Summer Institute for World Language Teachers.
