Craig Girten wins Greaves Summer Research Scholarship (May 2007)
Craig Girten, a junior student in the Walters research group, has received a Greaves Summer Research Scholarship for the summer of 2007 for his work on functionalizing dendrimers. Great job Craig!
Dr. Walters Featured in Recent Chemical and Engineering News (April 2007)
Dr. Walters has been featured in a recent issue of Chemical and Engineering News in an article on the symposium he presented his "Wikis, podcasts and screencasts (oh my!) in undergraduate chemistry coursework and research" talk at the recent ACS Chicago meeting.
Dr. Niewahner and Dr. Walters Publish in The Journal of Chemical Education (April 2007)
Drs. Niewahner and Walters have had great success recently publishing twice in the Journal of Chemical Education. The first article, in the March 2007 issue, was on an "Improved Synthesis of Geodken's Macrocycle through the Synthesis of the Dichloride Salt" (Link: article). A second article followed in the April issue was entitled, "Synthesis of Bis(1,2-dimethylimidazole)copper(I) Hexafluorophosphate: An Experiment Using a Glove Box" (Link: article).
Walters Group Members Attend ACS National Meeting (March 2007)
Recently, 16 undergraduate chemistry students from Northern Kentucky University (including Joel Deye, Craig Girten, Sean Goins, Celeste Morris and Rebecca Seger from the Walters group) presented their research at the 233rd American Chemical Society National Meeting in Chicago, IL. These same posters were later presented at the NKU Celebration of Research and Creativity Thousands of scientists attended the ACS meeting which featured important research advances in drug discovery, energy, and nanotechnology.
Traveling with the students were seven faculty, Drs. McGill, Oliver, Walters, Bullen, Paula, Russell and Kempton. The students were not the only ones making presentations at the meeting. Dr. Walters presented a talk entitled "Wikis, podcasts and screencasts (oh my!) in undergraduate chemistry coursework and research" about his use of alternative methods of delivering course content and solutions. Together, Drs. Walters and Bullen also presented their recent success with their nanomaterials course they recently taught in a talk called, "Development of a nanomaterials one week intersession course at NKU."
In addition to presenting the exciting work at NKU and attending talks given by some of the top chemists from around the globe, students and faculty alike were able to find time to enjoy both the fine food and many outstanding museums in the Chicago area.
Walters Group Members Attend KAS Meeting (November 2006)
Walters group members Craig Girten and Sean Goins attended the Kentucky Academy of Science 91st annual meeting in Morehead, KY on November 10. Both presented posters in the undergraduate research competition and received favorable comments.

Walters Group Members Attend ACS National Meeting (March 2006)
Stacy Conrad and Joel Deye , both members of the Walters research group, attended the ACS National Meeting in Anaheim, California in March. During this trip, both presented posters detailing their research progress. These same posters were later presented at the NKU Celebration of Research & Creativity in April, 2006 along with other representatives of the Walters group. Dr. W also made two oral presentations, one on his recent London study-abroad course and one in conjunction with Dr. Bullen on balancing teaching, research, and service responsibilities at a 4 year institution.

Walters Group Member Attend Posters at the Capitol (February 2006)
Walters group member Joel Deye attended the annual Posters at the Capitol meeting in Frankfort, KY in February, 2006. He presented a poster in the undergraduate research competition and had the opportunity to meet legislators and converse with NKU administration officials.

Dr. Walters Attends Photochemistry Conference (July 2005)
Dr. Walters has attended the 16th International Symposium on the Photochemistry and Photophysics of Coordination Compounds (ISPPCC) at the Asilomar Conference Center on the Monterey peninsula of California. While the weather was "less than ideal" during the conference, many of the world's top inorganic photochemists were in attendance and presented on their research. Dr. Walters presented a poster entitled "New Building Blocks for Supramolecular Photochemistry", which was very well received. After the conference, Dr. Walters and his wife enjoyed a few days of relaxation at Sequoia National Park before coming back to NKU.

Dr. Walters Part of Awarded Major Instrumentation Grant (June 2005)
NKU has received a Major Instrumentation Grant from NSF to acquire a Carbon-Hydrogen-Nitrogen-Sulfur analyzer. The grant was a joint effort between Dr. Richard Boyce, Dr. Miriam Steinetz-Kannan, Dr. Richard Durtsche (Department of Biological Sciences) and Dr. KC Russell and Dr. Walters (Department of Chemistry). Awesome!

Walters group members Sarah Beetem and Nicole King attended the annual Posters at the Capitol meeting in Frankfort, KY in February, 2005. Both presented posters in the undergraduate research competition and had the opportunity to meet legislators and converse with NKU President James Votruba. In all, four students and two faculty from the chemistry department attended the meeting.

Walters group members Sarah Beetem and Nicole King attended the Kentucky Academy of Science 90th annual meeting in Murray, KY on November 4-6. Both presented posters in the undergraduate research competition, and Sarah won first place in the Physical Sciences category. In all, seven students and four faculty from the chemistry department attended the meeting.

Dr. Walters Attends ACS Review Board (July 2004)
Dr. Walters spent a weekend at the American Chemical Society headquarters in Washington, DC serving on a review panel for annual reports submitted by student affiliate chapters across the country (including the chapter at NKU). Over 215 applications were reviewed, as well as grant applications for various community service projects. Dr. Walters also is serving on the advisory board of In Chemistry (the publication for ACS Student Affiliates) this year, so there were discussions on the topics to be covered in the coming year. When he wasn't busy, he and his wife Lisa spent the time seeing some of the sights of our nation's capital.

Two Walters Group Members Present at National ACS Meeting (March 2004)
Heather McMillen and Sara Beetem, both members of the Walters research group, attended the ACS National Meeting in Anaheim, California from 3/27-3/30. During this trip, both presented posters detailing their research progress since starting research last year. Heather's poster was entitled "Synthesis of a New Fullerene/Transition Metal Bridge for Charge Transfer Applications," and Sara's poster was entitled "Synthesis of a New Ligand to Facilitate Multi-metallic Chains." Both posters received interest from other chemists when presented during the undergraduate research poster session on March 29. Sara and Heather also participated in the undergraduate program while in Anaheim, learning about the LA Crime Lab, ideas to fund their graduate education, and chemistry in general by attended several research talks. The warm sunny weather was a great reward for their hard work in the lab. Good job, Heather and Sara!

Two Walters Group Members Receive SURG Awards (Nov. 2003)
The Northern Kentucky University Office of Research, Grants and Contracts recently reviewed proposals from departments campus-wide in order to award the first Student Undergraduate Research Grants (SURG). Over $5,000 total was awarded to 11 undergraduate proposals.
NKU Department of Chemistry students submitted five proposals and received five of the 11 awards. Heather McMillen submitted a proposal to complete the synthesis of a ligand that will provide a rigid bridge between a transition metal and fullerene (C60), while Sarah Beetem proposed the synthesis of a model "tethered" phenanthroline ligand that will allow transition metals to be joined in a novel multimetallic chain. Both students work with Professor Walters. Three awards were also given to students working with Professor Russell.
The SURG grants are designed to encourage undergradute research in all deciplines. SURG awards are available only to undergraduates working with faculty and are designed to support any project which contains "a basic or applied research component, or written documentation of a 'beginning to end' creative process." The proposals are written by undergraduates with faculty guidance. Applications are accepted in the spring and fall semesters and awards are for a maximum of $500.
Two Walters Group Members Present at Regional Inorganic Meeting (Nov. 2003)
Heather McMillen and Sarah Beetem, both students in the Walters research group, gave oral presentations on the progress of their research at the 4th Annual Ohio Inorganic Weekend. This meeting was held on the University of Cincinnati campus from Nov. 21-22 and attracted chemists from Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. While this meeting attracted the majority of the active graduate inorganic research groups in these states, Sarah and Heather did an excellent job showing all who attended the quality of research that can be performed at an undergraduate institution. Heather's talk was entitled "Synthesis of a novel fullerene/transition metal bridge: Implications of rigidity and conjugation", and focused on the research work she has conducted for Dr. Walters since joining his group this summer. Sarah's talk was entitled "Synthesis of a linear multimetallic chain using tethered phenanthroline ligands", and focused both on the initial synthetic work of Katie Cilwa (a former member of the Walters group) followed by the work Sarah has completed on the project since she inherited it this fall. Both considered the conference a good place to get their feet wet presenting their research outside of NKU and are eager to continue their research and get more exciting results before their next presentations in the spring semester.
Dr. Walters Receives KSEF Research Grant (July 2003)
Dr. Walters has received a $45,000 grant from the Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation for two years of funded research. You can read more about his grant at this website.
