COMPASS

The COMPASS test is a comprehensive computerized placement and diagnostic assessment instrument.  Northern Kentucky University administers the COMPASS for non-traditional students who are 21 years of age or older for admission purposes. The COMPASS can be used in lieu of ACT and SAT scores for admission into the University.

Please note:  The COMPASS test is used as an admission test for NKU.   If you are admitted to the University and score within the placement testing range on the COMPASS test, you will be required to take the free Placement Test, which is different from the COMPASS test. This must be done BEFORE you register for classes.  Please visit the Placement Test page for information on the test and how to register.

If you wish to retake the COMPASS, you must wait 30 days in between exams.

Important note

Please be aware that the College of  Education, Biology Department, and the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice have selective admission requirements at NKU which do not  accept COMPASS scores for admission purposes. The Nursing department does accepts COMPASS with certain restrictions. Please contact their office prior to registering for the COMPASS Exam. The Residual ACT, National ACT, or SAT scores are acceptable for programs that require selective admission.

Study Resources

To prepare for the COMPASS test you may use any ACT preparation guide.  COMPASS also has sample questions on their website, http://www.act.org/compass.

ENGLISH: This portion tests the grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.

READING:  This portion reviews vocabulary, content, and interpretation.

MATH:  This portion is composed of Geometry, Algebra I, and Algebra II.  On the Math portion you may use your own calculator or the one provided on the computer screen.

We suggest approximately two  hours for testing.  COMPASS will compute your scores upon your completion. Since COMPASS is computerized, please be aware that once you have gone on to the next question, you may not return to a previous question.  However, you may spend as long as you need on each question because there is no time limit.  Each person's number of questions in a particular area depends upon their level of proficiency in that area.
