MAMMALOGY  LAB - CHAPTERS 2,3,4

Chapter 2
    Goals
        1.  Be able to identify the key landmarks on the "typical" mammal skull.
        2.  Be able to identify where to take common measurements on the "typical" mammal skull.

    Do in lab
       1. Identify structure #1-34 listed in the "Key to Labeling of Figure 2.1" on p. 11
            exceptions:   #4, 5, 18, 19, 22, 26, 27,   revision: #24&25 = premaxilla; additions: cranium, mandible, braincase,  rostrum, nasal passages.

       2. Identify the measurements on pp. 10 - 11 marked with an asterisk (*).

Chapter 3
    Goals
        1.  Preview material on teeth for a later lecture.
        2.  Be able to identify the dental formal for any mammal skull you may be presented.

    Do in lab
       1.  Preview bold the terms on pp. 13& 17 for a later lecture.  (Don't memorize them now.)
       2.  Recognize the difference between: incisors, canines, premolars, and molars.
       3.  Give the dental formulae for the skulls provided.
            a) What type of feeding strategy (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore) might each have?
            b) What might be the most likely common name for each mammal?
            c) Are there similarities in dental formulae among the feeding strategies  or evolutionary histories?

Chapter 4
    Goals
        1.  Be able to identify the structures and layers in typical mammalian skin.
        2.  Be able to identify the main types of hairs found on most mammals.
        3.  Be able to identify the main types of mammalian color patterns and their function.

    Do in lab
        1.  In your lab book, do exercises: 4-A, 4-E, 4-F, 4-G .
        2.  Identify and give functions of vibrissae, guard hairs, and underhairs.  How might these vary among the habitat and lifestyle of the mammal?
        3.  Give the function (if any) of the following color patterns:
              a. cryptic coloration,      b. disruptive coloration,     c. countershading,    d. aposomatic coloration(warning coloration),   e. Gloger's rule,   f. albinism,     g. melanism
