Professor Joan Ferrante is author of Sociology: A Global Perspective (7th edition), an introduction to sociology textbook. It covers 16 topics standard to all mainstream sociology texts.  It differs from the traditional textbook in that 12 of the 16 chapters pair the chapter topic with a country – more specifically with an issue centered in the chosen country but that has critical relevance for understanding the United States and its position in the world order.  The other four chapters pair the sociological topic, not with a country, but with a broad theme related to global interdependence such as McDonaldization, the world’s richest and poorest peoples, or the global story behind the peopling of the United States.

She is co-editor of The Social Construction of Race and Ethnicity in the United States (with Prince Brown, Jr.)  Professor Joan Ferrante is also involved with community outreach and public engagement, in particular the Campus Connect Student Philanthropy Project. She supports a Study Abroad Scholarship at NKU called "Beyond the Classroom" that anyone who has taken an introduction to sociology using Sociology: A Global Perspective can apply.
