Calculator Unit Plan

Each student should develop a unit plan that uses one or more types of calculators to teach at least one area of the Kentucky Core Content for Assessment at an appropriate grade level. Each unit plan should have the following components. The plan should be word processed and preferably should be included on a web site with the URL distributed to the class. Each of the following components should be clearly labeled.

I. A brief description of the class the plan is intended for (grade level, number of students, any special characteristics)

II. A brief overview of the unit and a justification for choosing it. Include here the major Academic Expectations and Core Content that the unit will address, the type(s) of calculators that you plan to use, and any other related technology or manipulatives that will be needed to teach this unit.

III. A description of three activities related to the topic(s) from the Core Content for Mathematics Assessment that you plan to teach. The activities should be original, but you may adapt ideas from other sources. Each activity must include the following information. (Label each section.)

You must include a complete APA reference list for any sources used. At least one of your resources must be something from the internet. You should use at least four different resources for your unit.

IV. Write one open-response assessment item with a specific rubric to assess at least one of the areas that you have taught. The prompt that you write must be original and must require the use of a calculator as well as mathematical problem solving and/or reasoning. Follow the KCCT Assessment Guidelines in developing this item and rubric . Include the following information with your item.

a.) Identify the activity or activities being assessed

b.) Identify the specific topic from the Core Content for Assessment

c.) Put the item on a separate sheet ready to be duplicated and given to students. If a specific type of calculator is necessary, identify the type.

d.) Write a specific scoring guide for use with this item

e.) Include a sample level four response
