Extra Credit Opportunities

You may, if you wish earn up to 20 points of extra credit during the term. If done well, the following options are worth 10 points each:

Go to the Cincinnati Art Museum and look at the art for a particular period and culture we are studying. For example, you could look at the images on Grecian pottery (many of these images are explicitly literary in origin; others are depictions of everyday life). Or you could visit the exhibits on medieval or renaissance French or Italian art to gain insight into the texts we are reading from later periods. Write a one page, single-spaced report of what you observed in viewing various pieces of art from one place and time.
Watch a reasonably accurate attempt in film to depict one of the periods we have studied, or the staging of a piece of literature from the period, then write a 1 page, single-spaced review of the film. Some options include the following:

Memorize and recite a poem, a speech, or a soliloquy from one of the works we studied.
Spend an hour listening to Derek Jacobi's reading of The Iliad (on reserve in the Language Lab in LA530 on the fifth floor of Landrum). Then write a 1 page, single-spaced commentary comparing the experience of listening to Homer with reading Homer in your text.
