Seed Grant Program

The Seed Award Program was established by the Northern Kentucky University Research Foundation to encourage, support, and strengthen faculty research.  It provides funding to initiate research that will lead to the development and submittal of an externally funded grant proposal(s).

Maximum Award:  $3,000 for a period of up to one year

Eligibility:  Faculty must be fulltime tenured, tenure-track, or non-tenure track renewable appointment at time of application.  See guidelines for additional eligibility criteria.

Funds may be used for expenses directly related to the development of a future external grant proposal(s).  The applicant must adhere to federal OMB circular cost principles and to NKU grant procedures/guidelines.  Allowable costs include:

  • Student costs. 
  • Travel (e.g. to work with collaborators, mentors, or the targeted funding agency). 
  • Supplies, expendable equipment, or software. 
  • Other direct expenses critical to development of a future successful external grant proposal.

Seed Award funds cannot be used for faculty supplemental salary (such as summer salary), faculty extra compensation during the academic year, academic year release time, or adjunct replacement expenses.  Seed Award funds cannot be used for NKU staff supplemental salary or release.

How to Apply:  Complete and email the Seed application forms to the Director Grants Development, Gail Lange (langeg1@nku.edu).

 Review Process & Award Notification:  Seed Award proposals will be reviewed by the Executive Director of NKU Research Foundation and the Director of Grants Development within Research, Grants, & Contracts office.  Applicants will be notified of status (awarded or denied) by the Director of Grants Development approximately three weeks after submission.  Funds will be accessible within two weeks of the faculty member accepting the award and/or after all required paperwork is completed.

Required Progress Reports:  Grantees are required to submit two progress reports – one at a six month interval and one at the 12-month completion mark.
