Frequently Asked Questions - Undergraduate Residency/Reciprocity/Indiana Rate

I am currently being charged out of state tuition, how can I qualify for in-state tuition?

If your home is in Kentucky, you may qualify for Kentucky residency. Additionally, if one of your parents or legal guardian is a resident of Kentucky, you may qualify for Kentucky residency. If your home is in Ohio, you may qualify for Ohio Reciprocity. If your home is in Indiana, you may qualify for the Indiana Rate. If you do not qualify for either Ohio Reciprocity or Indiana Rate you will be charged out-of-state (non-resident) tuition.

Am I eligible for the undergraduate metro rate?

If you live in Adams, Brown, Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Fayette, Hamilton, Highland or Warren County in Ohio you will receive the undergraduate metro rate. If you notice you are not receiving the metro rate please contact the Office of the Registrar at (859) 572-6619.

I live in Ohio do I automatically qualify for Ohio Reciprocity?

You qualify for Ohio Reciprocity if you meet ALL of the following criteria:

If you live in one of the following counties: Adams, Brown, Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Fayette, Hamilton, Highland or Warren County

If you have earned an associate degree from the University of Cincinnati including Raymond Walters, and Clermont College, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, or Southern State Community College

If you are a first-time bachelor degree-seeking student not seeking a degree in early childhood education, environmental science, criminal justice , on-line programs or nursing.

If at any time you do not meet ALL of the above-listed criteria, Ohio Reciprocity may be revoked. You will be charged out-of-state tuition (non-resident).

What if I live in Indiana, can I apply for in-state-tuition?

If you live in Indiana, you may qualify for the Indiana Rate. Indiana residents who live in the following six counties may be eligible: Dearborn, Franklin, Jefferson, Ohio, Ripley, or Switzerland. Indiana Rate tuition is located on the Bursar's site: bursar.nku.edu

If you are independent of your family, the Office of the Registrar will need a copy of your driver's license showing residence in one of the eligible counties in Indiana.

If you are a dependent, the Office of the Registrar will need a copy of a parent's driver's license showing residence in one of the eligible counties in Indiana.

If at any time you relocate outside of the designated Indiana Rate counties, you will be charged out-of-state tuition (non-resident).

If my home is in Kentucky do I automatically qualify for Kentucky Residency, or do I have to live in Kentucky for a year before I qualify?

There is no time restriction as to how long you have to live in Kentucky before you can qualify for residency; however there are several other requirements you will have to meet before you can be considered a Kentucky resident. Please contact the Office of the Registrar for more information (859) 572-6619.

My family and I moved to Kentucky, do I qualify for residency?

If your family moved to Kentucky recently or after you applied to/entered NKU you will need to complete a residency packet to establish residency for tuition purposes. If you are a dependent, you will need to prove your parents' residency, not your own. In most cases documentation includes a Kentucky driver's license or state ID, vehicle registration, a copy of a lease agreement or deed of home, and often a job transfer letter or other financial documentation.  Additionally, if one of your parents or a legal guardian is a resident of Kentucky, you may qualify for Kentucky residency.

I have moved to Kentucky, I am independent from my parents who live in a different state, do I qualify for Kentucky residency?

You will need to complete the residency packet and provide documentation showing financial independence and a copy of a lease agreement or deed of home in Kentucky. If you have been independent for less than two calendar years, you must complete the parent information in the residency packet including a statement from your parents indicating they no longer provide financial support of any kind, claim you as a dependent on their taxes or provide health insurance coverage for you.

I just recently became a green card holder can I apply for a review of residency?

If you have a green card or were admitted to the United States with an Asylum status, you may request a review of residency to be considered for Kentucky residency. Most of our international students at NKU hold F-1 or J-1 visas and are not eligible to establish Kentucky residency.

I am a veteran, a spouse or dependent of a veteran or a member of the Armed Forces; can I apply for in-state tuition?

If you are a member of the Armed Forces, or a new veteran who maintained Kentucky residency during military duty, a photocopy of your DD214 is sufficient to submit for residency review.

If you are a veteran, spouse or dependent of a veteran stationed in Kentucky for a period of a year or longer, official military orders are required to establish residency for tuition. The residency packet should be completed.

Membership in the Kentucky National Guard does not establish residency for tuition purposes, unless the guard unit is called to active duty for a period of at least one year. Kentucky National Guard members should contact the Office of the Registrar for additional information (859) 572-6619.
