Academic Advising
Academic advising provides students with the opportunity to openly explore academic and career alternatives with an advisor. This activity engages the student’s own decision-making process and works toward the identification of educational, vocational, and life goals. Advisors also explain policies of the university and specific requirements of individual programs of study. Advising promotes student success by providing information, addressing problems, making appropriate referrals, and fostering an appreciation for life-long learning beyond the achievement of a degree.
If you are a student and you have declared a major, your advisor will come from that department (read further).
Advising for Undeclared and University Studies Students
The Academic Advising Resource Center (AARC), Founders Hall 405A, 859.572.6900, provides advising services to degree-seeking students without declared majors. This includes some Undeclared students and all University Studies students and non-degree-seeking students except student athletes, students participating in the Student Support Services program, disabled students participating in Disability Services program and students who have chosen to be Undeclared Arts and Sciences, Undeclared Business, Undeclared Education, undeclared Nursing and Health Professions, or Undeclared Informatics. It is required that all Undeclared students in the above listed programs go to those offices for advising.
All degree-seeking Undeclared students and University Studies students must meet individually with their advisor before registering for classes each semester. During the advising session, students will receive course approval for registering.
Advising appointments are limited; students should make one as early as possible to ensure course availability. AARC begins making appointments for the upcoming semester starting the third week of every semester. Be sure to visit AARC in Founders Hall 405A or call 859.572.6900 to schedule an advising appointment as soon as possible. It is very helpful to both student and advisor to come to the session well prepared by reviewing the upcoming course listings, previous coursework, and major interest(s) and by giving serious thought to career and life goals.
Advising for Students with Declared Majors
All departments within the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education and Human Services (new students and pre-majors) and College of Business (new students) and most departments within the College of Informatics require advising for registration. Registrations lacking appropriate approvals will not be processed. Students should contact their departments for an appointment. All students on academic probation require advising approval in order to register.
Students majoring in departments that do not require academic advising may request advising by making appointments with their appropriate academic department.
First-time students will be assigned an academic advisor during Northern Exposure or Open Registration.
