Shamima Ahmed

I came to the United States from Bangladesh in 1984 as a student at the University of Akron's Master of Urban Studies Program. I completed the Master's Degree in 1986 and then moved to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University to earn a Ph.D degree in Public Administration/Public Policy.

Upon completing my Ph.D program in 1991, I moved to Terre Haute, Indiana, and taught at Indiana State University as an adjunct faculty. In 1993, I joined Austin Peay State University as a tenure track faculty in the Department of Public Management.

I joined NKU in as a faculty member in 1995 and have been teaching mostly in the MPA program. Through the years, I have taught a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses, including Organizational Theory and Behavior, Human Resource Management, Public Policy, Executive Management, Research Methods, Nonprofit Management, Introduction to Public Administration and Race and Gender. My current teaching and research interests are in human resource management, nonprofit management and organizational theory and behavior.

I have been published in several peer reviewed outlets, including Public Personnel Management, International Journal of Public Administration, State & Local Government Review, Journal of Public Affairs Education and Journal of Management Development. I have also published a book on NGOs in International Politics (2006, Kumarian Press).

I enjoy engaging in civic engagement projects and have worked closely with a variety of local government and nonprofit agencies. Currently, I serve as the Education Chair of the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration.

There are several things I like about NKU. The foremost is our students, most of whom are non-traditional. They provide valuable insights, based on their life and job experiences, on the different topics and theories that we discuss in class. That makes our classroom learning environment more engaging and more enriched.
