Mathematics on the Mind
Vol. 2 No. 1
NKCTM Fall Conference at NKU
October 5, 2000 – see schedule on page 2
Elementary Mathematics for a New Millennium
The Elementary Mathematics program will be coordinated by Linda Phillips,
Elementary Mathematics Consultant Covington Independent Schools Instructional
Resource Team, and Linda Sheffield, Regents Professor, NKU. After briefly
discussing the new NCTM Principles and Standards for pre-kindergarten through
second grade and third through fifth grade, participants will be involved
in exploring activities exemplifying the new Standards. Some of these are
early drafts of geometry activities written for the new Navigations series,
a forthcoming NCTM series of activity books for teachers to accompany the
Principles and Standards. Others are activities from the Covington Algebra
for All projects, that originated from an innovative ESS Projects Grant
for all levels of students from elementary through middle grades.
Using Data to Make Comparisons and Decisions – Peanut Butter Taste Test
The presenters for the Middle School session will be Allison Colvin,
Campbell County Middle School and Maggie McGatha, NKU. PSSM suggest
that middle grades students need to develop and evaluate inferences and
predictions that are based on data. This session will focus on an instructional
activity in which a group of middle school students used data from 37 brands
of peanut butter in order to make comparisons and decisions. The students
also created their own data by conducting a peanut butter taste test.
New Ideas for a New Millennium
The presenters at the secondary session will be Sally Walker, Technology
Coordinator for Erlanger School District, and Sr. Anita Marie, Bishop Brossart
High School. The session is designed to help teachers become familiar
with the new NCTM standards by looking at problems that can be used within
the classroom and are appropriate to stress important Kentucky Core Content
as well as NCTM standards.
