Course=20 Objectives=20

To=20 expose students to many of the ethical, legal, and professional issues = involved=20 in the counseling profession and give them a basis for making more = informed=20 professional decisions.

To=20 provide students with a philosophical basis for making ethical decisions = in the=20 professional situations they encounter.

To=20 provide students with an opportunity to discuss many of the ethical, = legal, and=20 professional issues involved with counseling.

To=20 present students with a number of situations and questions that contain = ethical=20 and professional issues they may face as counselors in their = professional=20 positions.

To=20 analyze those situations and questions in terms of the ethical codes of = the=20 organizations under which all human service personnel work. To have = students=20 become knowledgeable about the ethical codes of the organizations within = different counseling settings.

To=20 provide the opportunity for student to work with situations and examples = consistent with his/her specific program area of study. =

Class=20 Outline and Assignment

Each module=20 will have a topic assigned.  It is up to you to prepare for that = topic in=20 writing. Often times neither the textbook nor will the web page = adequately cover=20 the topic, but you should find help with the ACA = standards. 

Included in=20 the course material is a reference list designed to address topics not = covered=20 by the textbook, as well as material that has been written since the = publication=20 of the textbook.  This list should be a helpful tool for finding=20 sources.  Since professional issues are so new that newspapers and=20 magazines are often the best sources.  Please copy these stories = and submit=20 them to the instructor.  Each student will be required to provide = one=20 current issue found in the popular press or professional=20 newsletters.  

Most modules=20 require knowledge of the 2005 ACA Code of Ethics and Standards of=20 Practice.   Read = them=20 first before completing any assignments.

Academic = Misconduct

       =20 Cheating and plagiarism are types of academic misconduct=85. The = term=20 =91plagiarism=92 includes, but is not limited to, the use, by = paraphrase or=20 direct quotation, of the published or unpublished work of another = person=20 without full and clear acknowledgement. Plagiarism also includes = the=20 unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person or = agency=20 engaged in the selling of term papers or other academic materials. = Specific penalties can be assigned by a faculty member=85. = Penalties can=20 include reducing or changing a grade or issuing a failing grade = for an=20 assignment/test or for the entire course and/or expulsion from the = academic program and the university. A student penalized for = academic=20 misconduct has the right of appeal (University of North Texas = Graduate=20 Catalog, 2002, p. 94).

 

To = avoid=20 plagiarism, follow guidelines in the current edition of the = Publication=20 Manual of the American Psychological Association. Some general = guidelines include:

 =20       = -      =20 Always cite the source of a quote or paraphrase. When quoting, = copy the=20 original material word-for-word.

       =20 -       If the quotation is less = than 40=20 words, place quotation marks around it; if it is 40 or more words, = indent=20 the quote as a block. Double space all text. Follow the conclusion = of the=20 quotation immediately with the citation of author(s), year of=20 publication=97or year of creation if original material is = unpublished, and=20 page number(s).

       =20 -       When paraphrasing, restate = concepts=20 in substantially different words than the original = material.

 =20       = -      =20 Immediately after the paraphrased material, cite author(s), year, = and,=20 whenever possible, page number(s).
