the landlocked gam

the above photo was taken by robert del tredici at the rockford college art gallery on friday, april 11, 1997. it is reproduced here with his permission.

in the photo, elizabeth schultz is discussing the drawings in bill fletcher's book the mad god as they stand in front of brian cruey's the spirit spout and a bosom friend near the whalebone jaws with which robert mccauley had framed the entrance of the landlocked gam.

for me as a teacher, moments such as this were the highlight of the day that my moby crew spent at the opening of their joint exhibition with students of rockford college in what may well be the first exhibition of moby-dick art by students of two colleges in one gallery. we are very grateful to robert mccauley, chair of the rockford college art department, and to maureen gustafson, the gallery director, for having invited us to participate in this unique venture.

for a narrative account of our visit to the opening, and a virtual gallery of what we exhibited there, visit our artshow.

For some background on how this event came about, see my source notes.

pictured below are the twelve members of the moby crew flanked by jay langguth and mickey gustafson on the left. on the right, in addition to myself, are beth schultz, robert del tredici, mert sealts, and robert mccauley.
