Tips
In any professional (business) program, it is expected that students will act responsibly and actively seek out the advice and information they need to successfully complete their college degrees. The larger the program is, the more important it is for each student to be proactive. Here are some things you can do - which should benefit you greatly. 1.) Read carefully all parts of this Advising page as well as the sections entitled "Academic Requirements" and "College of Business" in the appropriate NKU catalog. Clarify any questions or concerns with your advisor. 2.) Declare your pre-major as soon as possible. 3.) Once you have declared a pre-major (and thus made your advising folder available to your advisor), you can request that a complete graduation checklist be made for you. This list will include all of the general or university requirements, general studies requirements and Management or Marketing major requirements necessary for graduation. Please make an appointment with your advisor if you want to obtain such a work-up. 4.) It is physically impossible for more than 900 majors to meet individually with the Department advisors during open registration or the two-week pre-registration period. Your advisor can serve you best if you make an advance appointment at off-peak times (e.g., not during pre-registration or registration). It is not necessary (and certainly not wise) to wait to see your advisor until you have received your registration packet. If you choose to wait until then, you can be assured that you will be competing for your advisor's attention with scores of other students. 5.) Before registering for any course, always check the pre-requisites for that course in the course descriptions in the back of a current catalog or in the printed registration schedule. Students who fail to complete course pre-requisites before beginning subsequent courses will be removed from those courses by the Department. (Course pre-requisites are always governed by the current catalog and by the current year Advising Brief.) 6.) Don't depend on the University to keep all of your records straight. You should develop and maintain your own file - in which grade reports, approval forms, etc. are kept. Having a retrievable file of this type will make your academic life easier and will eliminate many potential problems "down the road."
