The Major

The major in management is
designed to provide graduates with the fundamental personal,
interpersonal, conceptual, and technical knowledge and skills they need to
effectively manage organizational operations.
All students are expected to
master a variety of business communication forms (e.g., formal
presentations, written reports, etc.) and to develop the basic behavioral
competencies necessary for those who intend to plan, organize, lead, and
control the work of others in an organization. These behavioral
competencies imperatively include team-building and small group management
skills. Management students must also analyze complicated business
problems and seek to become adept at using both quantitative and
qualitative decision making techniques. Likewise, current and
historically important theories of organization and human work behavior
are studied so that students might acquire a context for understanding the
complex and dynamic processes which occur in contemporary
organizations. The required courses in the management major place an
emphasis on learning that should facilitate long-term development as a
management professional.
The focus of the management
program is on the knowledge-base and skills which underlie effective
management practice irrespective of organization- or industry-type.
Thus, graduates of the management program typically seek
college-entry-level positions in general management or management-trainee
positions in virtually any field – from banking to health care to
manufacturing to sports or transportation (and so on).
Curriculum
Students majoring in management are required
to complete a comprehensive program of general education, business
administration, management, and elective coursework.
General education courses include English
composition and literature, speech, history, science, mathematics and
statistics, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences.
Business administration courses
include accounting, economics, finance, information systems, business
communication, and marketing.
Management courses include managerial and
organizational behavior, human resources administration, organizational
change and improvement, business policy and strategy, and production and
operations management – as well as a choice of management electives in
areas such as international, total quality, or small business management.
Elective coursework can be chosen in a
variety of fields outside of business, as a particular student's interests
dictate. Students must complete at least 58 semester hours of non-College
of Business coursework (of which the general studies or other graduation requirements
can be a part).
Students majoring in management must complete
the 23 courses listed below (several of these also fulfill general studies requirements). Students
must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.50 after having
completed the 11 courses marked with an asterisk in the list – plus
ENG 101 College Writing, ENG 291 Advanced Writing, and SPE 101 Principles
of Speech Communication. Transfer students must complete at least 50%, 12
of the required 24 courses, in residence at NKU.
