Mathematics

The power to solve...

  • A major in mathematics, leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science, requires the completion of both a common core of courses and one of three possible tracks:

    Core Courses:

    • CALCULUS:
      • MAT 129 Calculus I (4 credits) and MAT 229 Calculus II (5 credits)
        or
      • MAT 128 Calculus A, MAT 227 Calculus B, and MAT 228 Calculus C (3 credits each)
    • COMPUTING:
      • CSC 270 Mathematics Software Programming (3 credits)
        or
      • INF 260 Computer Programming I (3 credits)
    • MAT 194 Mathematical Sciences Seminar (1 credit)
    • MAT 234 Linear Algebra (3 credits)
    • STA 250 Probability and Statistics I (3 credits)
    • MAT 329 Multivariable Calculus (4 credits)
    • MAT 497 Mathematical Sciences Capstone (3 credits)


    Electives: One of the following sets of 3-credit courses

    • Pure mathematics track:
      • MAT 302 Introduction to Higher Mathematics
      • MAT 310 Elementary Theory of Numbers or MAT 410 Abstract Algebra
      • MAT 420 Real Variables I or MAT 430 Complex Variables
      • One 300-level or above MAT/STA course
      • Two 400-level MAT/STA courses

    • Applied mathematics track:
      • MAT 325 Differential Equations
      • Two of:
        • MAT 330 Clasical Applied Analysis
        • MAT 360 Numerical Analysis
        • MAT 375 Applied Mathematical Models
      • Three 300-level or above MAT/STA courses

    • General Mathematics Track:
      • MAT 302 Introduction to Higher Mathematics
      • MAT 345 Introduction to Geometry
      • MAT 310 Elementary Theory of Numbers or MAT 410 Abstract Algebra I
      • STA 341 Statistics II
      • One of the sequences of courses:
        • STA 340 Probability and one other 300-level or above MAT/STA course
        • MAT 325 Differential Equations or MAT 330 Classical Applied Analysis
        • MAT 310 Elementary Theory of Numbers or MAT 410 Abstract Algebra I and one other 300-level or above MAT/STA course
        • two 400-level MAT/STA courses

    Double Major:

    • A double major in mathematics and statistics requires a minimum of 58 credit hours of courses that count for at least one of the two majors.
