We're looking for adventurous math students....

Sign up for The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM)

  • The MCM is held over a long weekend in February—from 8 p.m. Thursday, February 18 until 8 p.m. Monday, February 22 here at NKU.
  • We’d like to field at least five teams of 3 people each.
  • Background of participants: Interest in modeling and solving problems; Coursework in MAT, STA, CSC, PHY, or INF is helpful.

Here is one of the problems from last year’s MCM (teams pick one of two to solve):
PROBLEM A: Designing a Traffic Circle. Many cities and communities have traffic circles—from large ones with many lanes in the circle (such as at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the Victory Monument in Bangkok) to small ones with one or two lanes in the circle. Some of these traffic circles position a stop sign or a yield sign on every incoming road that gives priority to traffic already in the circle; some position a yield sign in the circle at each incoming road to give priority to incoming traffic; and some position a traffic light on each incoming road (with no right turn allowed on a red light). Other designs may also be possible. The goal of this problem is to use a model to determine how best to control traffic flow in, around, and out of a circle.

  • Each team prepares a carefully written solution (using any inanimate source).
  • E-Mail Dr. Holden holdenl@nku.edu or stop by ST 320 by Friday, December 11, 2009.
