You're reading PILOT BUZZ CENTRAL!
#16 Miss/Guided
Who picked it up? ABC
When does it air? Midseason
Who stars? Judy Greer and Brooke Burns, among others.
Why should you care? This show is the funniest ABC half-hour comedy since Sons & Daughters -- and unlike that show, this one is not as weird. The pilot is one of the few comedy pilots from the development season with some laugh out loud funny moments, and there is the definite sense that the cast (what incredible chemistry!) is just getting started.
Why should you worry? It's a comedy. On ABC. And they don't seem to have any idea of where they are going to put it or what they're going to partner it with. Also, some of the jokes were a little cliched.
Bottom line? Much like CBS's problems with Cane, this pilot is on the wrong network. ABC doesn't know how to handle comedies, and it certainly doesn't seem to have a good spot for something as fresh as Miss/Guided. Too bad NBC wasn't airing this -- it would be perfect as a Thursday night Must See comedy. If ABC lets it build, and if Rob Thomas can work his witty magic, then this one has a lot of potential. ABC already fixed the initial problems with the pilot and transformed it from the juvenile dud it first appeared to be (the net almost let it go) and into a bona fide contender. Let's hope one more tweak allows this to be the first true ABC half-hour comedy hit (both in the critical and popular sense) since Dharma and Greg waaaaayyyyyyyyy back in the 90s.
