Calhoun Spady Professional Development Seminar

July 2007

Justification:

It has been ten years since we held a professional development seminar for the teachers of Calhoun Spady. They ask constantly for further training, because they realize the importance of professional development. It's essential that our teachers receive training because they are not generally graduates of schools which teach the pedagogy of education: what they know they learned on their own, and quite frankly it's not always what's best for our students.

While we realize the importance of professional development, we don't have the means to offer it. The last seminar that we offered was in August, 1997: after ten years, we consider it an obligation to organize another session in July, 2007, for 50 teachers in our school. But we need help to fund this important mission.

Importance of the training:

Each teacher is a leader of his or her class: in addition to the curriculum, each teacher must work hard to transmit good values and moral instruction to the children. Our responsibility is to help create the future leaders of Haiti. We want to impart to our teachers this sense of this important mission for our country. We want to inspire our teachers to model behaviors that will serve the interests of our nation, at the same time as they teach the curriculum. Our teachers often lack skills in important areas like discipline, exam monitoring, lecture preparation, etc.: we need to help them with these essentials.

Our needs for the training:

  1. Teacher trainers/Assistants

    1. Two teacher trainer experts will come from Port-au-Prince:
      Transportation $240
      Food for one week $150
      Teaching$1000
      Subtotal $1390
    2. Two teacher trainers will be from Ranquitte:
      Teaching (for two weeks) $1000
    3. Practice teaching instructors: Five teachers who live in Ranquitte.
      Practice in Social Science $150
      Practice in Experimental Sciences $150
      Practice in Creole $150
      Practice in French $150
      Practice in Math $200
      Subtotal$800

  2. Food for the participants:

The training will be done in two weeks 8:30 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon. We will give lunch in the morning at ten and dinner in the afternoon at 1:30.We will have 50 teacher participants, and require $3 for foods for each teacher each day. $3x50 = $150 per day, for ten days.

    Food for Participants $1500

  3. Financial Need Summary:

    Outside Experts $1390
    Teacher trainers from Ranquitte $1000
    Practicum Assistants $ 800
    Food $1500
    Grand Total $4690

We pray that God will give us friends who can help with this, because it's very important for the school. We will be delighted with financing of any part of the training, by any one. Thank you so much to any one who finds it in their heart to help the school in this way.

Yours sincerely,
