"Count up" to the bright future George Bush
promises!
But can we hold him accountable if that day doesn't dawn?
-
George Bush says we're going to turn Iraq into a democratic showpiece
for the region. I just thought that I'd keep track of the number of
days until that happens (from March 19, 2003, the first day of george bush's
war).
It's been
-
I guess this war is supposed to lead to peace in Israel as well. I
have a feeling that it will take as many days to achieve that, as
well, so we'll just use the same counter.
We'll also count the days until we've won the 'war on terror'. I think, once
again, that this will be at least the same number of days (actually, I think that it will be the number of days
until the sun explodes...).
Has there been democracy in Iraq, peace in Israel, or an end to the war on terrorism yet?
Have we gotten rid of George Bush yet? That, at least, is something that I hope
to see in my lifetime....
Until we fight and win the war on injustice, we will never - ever! - win the war on terrorism. The United States has waged unjust economic and sociologic war on other countries in the world, and their peoples are understandably angry. They hate us, and will do what they can to make our lives hell. One (perfectly understandable and yet horrifying) consequence of this is terrorism. But so long as we continue to allow our companies to oppress workers in other countries, and support regimes like that of the Shah of Iran, Saddam Hussein (yes, we armed him), and General Pervez Musharraf President (of Pakistan), what do we expect? We've supported and armed tyrants routinely, when it serves our (short-sighted) interests, and yet we are surprised when the people who suffer under these practices hate us....
Bring home the troops!
"Let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream." Martin Luthor King, quoting Amos 5:24 ["But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream." King James Version]
"People who say we are not at war are either disingenuous or naive," Mr. Bush said at another point.
We're not at war. If we were, it would be possible to have an armistice
day. When could we declare hostilities at an end? It's a lot like scientific
theories: their power lies in their falsifiability: a theory which is not
falsifiable is not really a theory. And a war that can't be declared over is
not a war.
A "War on Terror" is George's excuse and unending opportunity to exercise his
despotic will on the American people.
"If you want peace, work for justice."
- Pope Paul VI (1897-1978)
"We cannot kill our way to love and respect, where our only true security resides."
- Granny D, quoted by Pete Seeger
What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and
have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked,
and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in
peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those
things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so
faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. [James 2:14-17 (King James Version)]
"Intelligence gathered by this and other governments
leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess
and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised...
The people of the United States and our friends and allies
will not live at the mercy of an outlaw regime that threatens the peace with weapons of mass murder." (quoted from Washington Post)
