The English major teaches important skills: reading analytically and creatively, thinking critically, communicating effectively. The study of literature develops an appreciation for language, culture, and values. Students who have studied English bring to a job or career an enhanced facility for interpreting and communicating ideas and information. An understanding of language and mastery of its use are the foundation for intellectual development and occupational achievement. The student who studies English is consistently engaged in careful reading, interpretation of written texts, and effective writing. These skills are useful to many career fields, thus making it possible for English majors to pursue a variety of occupations and professions. The English major also offers an opportunity to read and write about important literary texts and traditions and to consider how these texts and traditions relate to the values of cultures and individuals. The insight into human values provided by the study of language and literature gives students of English much more than training for a single vocation. The English major is a liberal and liberating course of study which pertains as much to the quality of life one lives as to the career one pursues.
